The founding of Varangurd

The anchorage that became Varangurd was originally planned as a saturation-depth research station, with commissioning expected sometime in 2140. A storm system in autumn 2138 destroyed the surface platform that had been serving as primary shelter for the resident survey team, and the station's first three modules were brought online four months ahead of schedule, with crew quarters that were not yet officially habitable.

What was unfinished at commissioning

The thermal regulation in the second module. The acoustic isolation between modules one and three. The pressure interlock on the lower-rib umbilical. The redundant scrubber on module one. The morale of the crew.

Why the schedule held

Because the alternative was the surface, and the surface was no longer survivable for the season. The station's engineering log for the first winter records, in successive entries, the substitution of expediency for procedure, and then the substitution of procedure for expediency, in a slow regularisation that the Bathymetric Conservancy would later codify as standard commissioning practice.

What is observed annually

Each autumn, the anchorage's senior crew acknowledge the founding by leaving the second module's thermal trim slightly out of nominal, in deliberate honour of its first winter. The practice is unofficial. It has not been omitted in any year on record.
